Stripping

Mardi Gras is upon us once again and I have shared with you before that they begin right after the first of the year. Each Sunday they dress up in scary masks, carry whips and machetes, and where these outfits of strips of white paper that really makes them look like chickens.

It is amusing to say the least, but the intent isn’t for amusement but to see if they are able to scare people. I compare it to our Halloween really. It really is marked with evil. It isn’t the beads and candy and such like they do in the states. They do parades in the streets playing drums and blowing horns, but these funny, scary chickens are not what I would say in good fun.

As I said it is all marked with evil and it was ever so prevalent yesterday when they were out - as this is the beginning of Carnaval. They were out walking about cracking their whips and such and were on our street. Mikela, Rosie and Gabe were all out front playing with the neighborhood kids. Last year at this time all the kids were pretty scared of this time…running inside our gate not wanting to walk the streets for fear of these goofy looking chickens. This year however they have become quite the opposite…making fun of them, laughing at them, and standing their ground. (For the most part:>)

Yesterday Gabe went up to one of them and began taking the paper off one the guys and telling him to leave them alone. I being cautious called Gabe to keep his hands to himself and that I loved that he was being protective. He came over to me with the paper in his hand and when I looked at it….I simply didn’t know whether to scream out of anger or cry.

This young man’s costume was made of strips of God’s Word. He had ripped to shreds God’s love letter to us. Mikela yelled up to me “Miss Beth he used the Bible…are you sad?” I called back down to her, ” Yes Mikela I am. My heart is broken.” She then proceeded to tell this to the young boy. He shrugged her off and went on his way.

As I have thought about this since yesterday I was reminded of how Jesus was stripped, undoubtedly to shreds, just as this boy has done to His Word. Those that have seen The Passion of the Christ know how graphic the scene was of Christ being whipped. I know that was a mild showing of what our Lord really endured. He faced this ripping and shredding as well on the old rugged cross for you and for me. But he also endured this horrific pain for this young boy and the many men and boys that are walking up and down these streets trying to make us run in fear.

I (we) am here to love those who right now don’t know Jesus - who need to know Jesus and who need the Light of God’s Word to shine upon them. Whether they know it or not, these young men have placed upon them a book that is living and breathing. I know that my God is Able to do immeasurably more than all I ask or imagine, according to His power that is at work within me…RIGHT NOW!!! (Ephesians 3:20)

I want to see God move in these young boys and men…I want to see Him move in this community…I want to see Him move in the Northwest Zone….and YES I want to see Him move in this country to break the strongholds that shackle them to untruths and generational sins and free them. They may think they are free because of how they gained their freedom from slavery, but the shackles are still there, just in different form.

May the Lord open the eyes of their hearts to real freedom…freedom that comes with knowing Jesus Christ and hungering to know Him more. May God’s Word penetrate the hearts of those who wear His Word. Strip them Lord of what binds them and loose upon them your strong Presence and Your Love that can melt the hardest of hearts. Use me Lord as an instrument for Your will and Your way. Do this Lord or something even better!!! Amen.

Mission Navigation Boat Update…

Cafeteria…

Even though it’s not plastered yet – it really is beautiful!

You’ll see a picture of the girls peeking through a little window. In that photo they are standing in the kitchen area. They are looking through our serving window!

When we begin our feeding programs - children will come in and sit. We will have a devotion and prayer time with them. Then they’ll make a line and grab their bowls through that serving window.

The picture in the bottom right corner is that kitchen space where they’re standing.

Ministry Update…

It’s been a few weeks since we’ve blogged! Unfortunately I (Jody) have been really sick. I wanted to go ahead and give a small update today! I’ll try to post a lot more this week.

ORPHANAGE

It was our goal to open the orphanage the first week of February! We were SO CLOSE!!!

Unfortunately we needed just a few more weeks to get everything in place! We are graveling the courtyard in front of the homes, welding metal beds, constructing dressers, creating a large sand box, building shutters for the windows that face the street, building shelves for the kitchen area, preparing a small clinic area for sick orphans, shopping for needed kitchen supplies, etc.

I’ll post pictures of the progress soon.

We are fairly certain we can get all of this done in the next ten days! So we have changed our opening date to March 1st! We will begin this new venture with 11 littles ones aged 2 -5. I will be sharing their stories throughout the next two weeks.

I am currently working on an orphanage needs list! I hope to post that later this week.

CAFETERIA

Our cafeteria should be nearly completed by this Saturday! They began laying the tin roof yesterday. We will pour the floor on Tuesday. The cafeteria will hold 200-300 people at one time! As our feeding programs begin – this place will not only physically meet needs – but we will share the Gospel before each meal is served!

PRESKUL

I meant to post pictures of this earlier but the cistern in Preskul was completed this past January!

ON-GOING MINISTRY

Water Cones – We are STILL working with the people who manufacture the water cones. They apparently have changed the design some. These cones are made in Germany. I have enough funds to purchase 22 but am still waiting for them to be in stock so they can process our order.

Bibles/Songbooks – Last week we secured 50 Bibles and songbooks! We will be distributing them this week! What a blessing for the people here – to have their own Bible to read each night! In Haiti people don’t just carry their Bible everywhere they go – they also carry their songbook! Knowing we can provide those to people who long to worship Jesus everywhere they go – is just amazing!!

Feeding – We are still feeding people thanks to monthly donations! We are so grateful to those of you who sacrifice each month so that others here may experience the very thing we take for granted – a full belly. For every $10.00 food donation we receive – we are able to provide 40 meals!

March Ministry Plans – We will be hosting our annual Teen Conference March 12th-16th! We will build a cistern for KaPaFu. We will begin full-time construction on the school. We also have several teams scheduled! God is GREAT!

Children’s Church

I can’t tell you how awesome it was today to see the completed Children’s Church Pavilion! Last year we had a simple thatch structure that was destroyed by the hurricane.

Many kids quit coming to church because they had to sit in big church – which seems boring to little kids. At one point we had over 60 kids in children’s church. When we lost the thatch shakoon we dropped to about 20 kids. Today I saw some kids I haven’t seen in a long time.

Our tent church has activities every day and the kids weren’t able to meet even during the week. Thanks to donations made to Mole Ministry we were able to provide this building! We will use it to teach little kids about Jesus three times a week!

2012 Rockstars – Last Day…

From Black Mountain -

Well, we ended with another wonderful day in the Mole. Unfortunately, we did not get finished with the boat, but the boat builder is staying around to finish it up. We did actually get a few pieces of our handmade lumber nailed together, but only after we had 4 and 5 inch nails delivered…..since we were not really prepared for the whole log thing, we did not bring the proper nails.

Good news is that in our spare time, we were able to fix the gate to the campus. We used some metal tubing scraps from the bed building group, Aaron grabbed their welder, and we got it DONE. We were even told “VERY GOOD JOB” by one of the Haitian construction supervisors that we called “Big boss man”.

Overall, we are exhausted, and ready to see our families, so we look forward to sharing all our pics and stories. See you all back in the States. Pray for safe travels for the team, home, and for the McLellans as they continue traveling in Haiti.

Just wanting to remind everyone that Kelly and I (Gray and WIlla too), will be leaving the Mole tomorrow, and will continue our trip here in Haiti to the main campus in St Louis du Nord. We are hoping to have some internet access there, so we will be trying to update our Facebook page from there. We would love to continue to communicate with you all there, so please friend us, if you have not already. See you there…..Ryan

Elodie, Abigail and Micah I miss you so much and can’t wait to see you. Its been an amazing trip but we are all completely exhausted physically, mentally and emotionally. We are so blessed as a family. Abigail and Micah, I’ll see you when you wake up on Saturday! Elodie I’ll call when we land in the States and I can’t wait to see you tomorrow night. All of the teams finished strong tonight!! It’s been such an honor getting to know everyone! We have had some internet issues and not everyone had a chance to blog. Unfortunately we were unable to upload pictures tonight either! SO SORRY!!!

Tomorrow we will have breakfast at 7am and the team will load planes heading to PAP and then on to the states! Thanks to everyone for their encouraging posts/comments. It really meant a lot to the teams!

2012 Rockstars – Day 6…

Jody (the missionary here) tells the story that when the earthquake hit, CNN was filming and in the background while they filmed, some of the Haitians were singing this in the midst of their loss and devastation.

Which means -

Everything is already OK - Because Jesus still sits on his throne!!!

I have to ask myself, is that my song in the midst of crisis? Is that my song all the time? Is it your song? Would you sing that if an earthquake swallowed up everything you own, your family, your children, life as you know it????

Today the men worked tirelessly to finish up their triple tier bunk beds….these men are amazing! Sharon, Andrea, and Cindy you would be brought to tears if you could see your husbands work diligently at construction…. and at the same time instruct the Haitian workers. Not only are they working together side by side, but they are building lasting relationships that will forever impact both us and them.

The ladies gracefully hiked their skirts up and stepped into boats this morning. We enjoyed a beautiful and breezy ride with the sun in our faces and the Lord in our hearts. We headed to a fishing village 2 to 3 miles by boat across the Bay area. Kim presented the Gospel with the power of the Holy Spirit upon her. We all spent time with the people of Preskul fishing village, handed out snacks, and enjoyed some fellowship together.

We all spoke with a man named Alex who was sure that God cared more about the white people then Asians and blacks. I encourage you all to ponder that for a minute ….. that is something we should all let set in. In the book “Hole in our gospel” is something like this (I don’t have the book so this is just my memory)…If all the Christians in the USA would truly give the 10% God asks us to, we could rid the world hunger epidemic (again….I hope I am remembering that stat correctly…but still, you see my point).

Is it our fault that Haiti is the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere? NO, but are those of us “seemingly fortunate american’s” showing the love of Jesus? Are we being His hands and feet? I would say as a collective unit : WE ARE NOT! If we were, would men like Alex wonder if God loves America more than Haiti?

In a Bible study that NWHCM gives us, it defines poverty as: a consequence we have due to sin which leads to broken relationships, and separation from God due to sinful decisions. So, I am guessing since we are all sinners, many of us in America are suffering from poverty…poverty of joy which comes from being in a deep fulfilling relationship with Christ. In that definition, many Haitians are very rich!!! Bringing it back to the song I listed above….I ask you again…..are you so rich, so prosperous, so wealthy in the Lord that when crisis hits in the blink of an eye that you sing:

Everything is already OK

Because God still sits on his throne!!!

From Black Mountain: well today was an exciting day. David gave a great devotion this morning. we took a 40 minute boat ride to a remote fishing village where Kelly led a vacation bible school and painted nails. the ride back was quite an experience. we cut out some more parts for the boat, it has been a great experience working with a Haitian boat builder.

my life has been changed this week, i cant belive how much this trip has been an eye opener cant wait to share see y’all soon. Austin

Today we went by boat to the fishing village and told the parable of the lost sheep. So cool to tell the story and hear it being told back in Creole. All of the houses were thatch roof. They had fishing nets all around with snapper, conch and parrot fish. It was like you would see in the movies! Such an honor to tell the story and to be reminded of how God searches for us. He knows each of us by name- if we wander away He knows and will search for us until we are found safe in His arms. Then snack and then some played soccer and some painted toenails for the women. It was so sweet to hold each foot in my lap and pray for each one. I asked them to sing and they sang in creole about the joy in their heart. They have not seen a white person since August. The boat ride was interesting - a combination of splash mountain a wet t-shirt contest (Aaron won!) Tanners- thanks for loving Rayney. Wondering how she would like it down here…

Faith your husband rocked the worship yesterday with a guitar - thought you would want to know.

Austin and David have done the devotions for our group, Jacob is going to sing Prince of Peace. Funny that the men of our group have shied away but the “up and coming” men have been impressive. They will be incredible leaders.

John has learned Miss Mary Mack with style. Richard is getting worked by the kids in basketball and soccer. Jason and his quiet thoughtful way is always there to help and speak encouragement to those around him. Wes is straight out of M.A.S.H.. He has got some of the best one-liners. My kids are amazing. Gray now has a machete and a whip! (it is Mardi Gras down here and all the boys are popping them in the street) Pray that we don’t end up in the clinic. Willa is jumping rope like a mad woman and Miss Mary Macking ad nauseam… My husband is my hero. It is because of him and his willingness to lead that we are all here. Thank you God for that man! Garden, Goats, Chicken, Clinic Team

Up at the crack of dawn to plant beans, corn and melons. Then to water goats in the stream, stubborn little guys. The goats taught us that there is always a leader and most will follow if we figure out who it is! The chickens were sorted and sent off with families to live. The chick coops are well made and have a lot of character. The clinic was so full this afternoon that we had to send 32 home to return in the morning. A noon dip in the sea refreshed us all and the afternoon flew by. Our team is quite the group and we are all very motivated to do our work. Surely the Lord is in this place.

2012 Rockstars – Day 5

Hello PV families. Today was a good day Alan and his crew completed another bunk bed unit and welded them together. Cliff kept the whole project together while also installing all of the electrical boxes and conduit ran to get electricity into one building. My crew was able to finish 2 of the 3 drawer units that will go under the bunk beds, and a good start on a 6 shelf wardrobe. To my wife Andrea & Paige & Tarin I love and miss you all. God bless you from all the PV Boys.

Hello PV families part 2: We did our first VBS/Sports Camp this afternoon and it was awesome! We think we had about 150 kids but it was hard to keep count because they just kept showing up! We had 3 sports stations: volleyball, kickball, and jump rope and we cycled the kids through them. I’m not sure any new skills were really learned but we had a lot of fun playing and more importantly – they had fun! After that, Kim taught a lesson about the fruits of the spirit and the kids were very attentive. We wrapped up the afternoon by handing out a package of crackers to every kid. I have to say it was basically controlled chaos but that wasn’t too surprising! Thanks to all of you who donated volleyballs, crackers, etc! God bless you from Gayla and the rest of the PV Girls!

The Cincinnati team spent the morning gardening! This afternoon they went to Mare Rouge to pick up 18 goats! Many got loose on the ride back! It’s always an adventure traveling with animals!

They will start giving the animals away tomorrow!

iSight

Today was another exciting day we continued our work on the boat. Wes, Jacob and David had a great turn out for the clinic. Kelly did more hut to hut evangelism and she also worked with another church group with a sports clinic.

An exert from our devotions that wraps up what the Boat Builders pray for their hearts to be. If anything, we have been humbled beyond measure. “By walking with and working with (not on or for) our brothers, we affirm them and their inherent worth. In time, as relationships build, we can share skills and ideas, but it may be of even greater value to be learners of the culture, life and skills that have made survival possible for them up to this point.” The boat is not where we imagined it would be and our American tools are definitely not working with the usefulness and speed that we envisioned but the relationship that is slowly building between us and the master boat builder is a gift. Why do we continue to think that our plans are greater than our God’s. How amazing is He!

Jerry – I want to let you know that this trip has changed my life and I cant wait to tell you all the good experiences i have had love you man. – Austin

Addie and Ryland, I hope you are enjoying the pictures of the Haitian kids and families. I played soccer with a lot of the kids today and thought of you guys and wished you were here. Heidi, it does look like the clock was wrong but 12:00 am is still pretty late. Love you guys!

2012 Rockstars – Day 4…

Hi friends and family

Isn’t it the truth that when someone tells us not to do or look at something, our first instinct is to do exactly that and do it or look?!?! The same is true in Haiti—no matter how many times Allen told us and the workers not to look directly at the light when someone was welding or we would burn our eyes, we all had to continually fight the urge to look. There is probably some spiritual parallel to be drawn from that about being attracted to light and Jesus is the Light, but really we just spent the whole day reminding each other not to look as we tried to paint the walls around the bunk bed welding and wooden cubby construction going on in the same room.

The guys spent literally sun up to sun down constructing furniture to go in the first room of the orphanage breaking only to eat meals while us girls worked hard putting 2 coats of paint on the 12-foot concrete walls around them. After finishing the painting, the girls were able to spend some time walking through town with our interpreter inviting children to come to our sports camp/VBS that we are doing tomorrow afternoon.

Another wonderful day here. Actually made good progress today on cutting out several boat parts. Logs to lumber takes time, patience and a lot of sweat. Thanks to a new axe head with a new handle we made, and a new very large hand saw that they brought us, we had a very tiring and productive day cutting out boat parts. Gray even made a boat paddle. Wes and crew ran a clinic all day and probably saw over 100 people, everything from infections to broken legs. Kelly went out into the hillside villages and spent time sharing the Gospel with people, praying with them, and even washing womans feet in their homes. The word spread about her coming around and she even had people waiting for her to come by. Aaron is feeling right at home, as they asked him to clear some trees and brush to prepare a new area for more orphanage housing. Everyone is feeling great and really enjoying our time and our fellowship. Thank you all for your support to get us to this amazing place and your continued prayers. We love you all and love hearing your comments at dinner every night.

God changed things up today for me. He has a way of doing that! Brought crafts- ended up washing feet! I was so blessed today. God reminded me of John 14- and how Jesus showed His love. Many stories to tell… went to serve and ended up being served. I was blown away when a woman asked if she could wash my feet- she even painted my toenails! God is great! 2012 Rockstars – Day 3…

PV friends and family… We want to hear from you on the blog. Jody reads the comments to us every night, and we are looking forward to hearing from you. We love and miss you all. We have heard from my favorite blogger (Dan O’Hara). Thank you my love (Kim).

OK, I didn’t know I was the official blogger today so I will just tell you my take on the day. Sunday is a day of rest in Haiti. We went to church. Although I couldn’t understand a word spoken in the service it was beautiful!! It gave me a bigger picture of our God and Father. It was beautiful to see His children worshipping Him. I am sure it was a sweet aroma to our daddy. I can’t imagine what heaven will be like. I feel like I saw a little “piece” of it this morning. I got such a sense that the pastor had a huge heart for our Lord.

After service, we walked to the GORGEOUS beach. As typical, the children were flocking to us. They love to have their hands held, backs rubbed… anything we can give them. It is amazing how all that love and a simple smile can break the language barrier. It is neat to experience.

My favorite part was the walk back with our interpreter, Pierre. We were just picking his brain about the culture. What I learned from Pierre is that he is a good man who loves the Lord and I loved that the message he tried to convey was that we have to listen for God and allow Him to make the way. We can learn so much from them!! Pierre lives away from his wife and kids, but loves his family and wants to provide for them. He will move his family here when God provides a way. May we learn to listen to God and allow Him to make the way for us.

I have this feeling it will be hard for me to reconcile the life the Americans lead after being here. I didn’t realize all of the things we have to be thankful for, like warm showers, roads, clean water, lights, and I could keep going.

So thankful for this opportunity! Oh… One last blessing. McKayla was starting to get sick and she told me she was talking to God, “Please don’t let me get sick today. I have a lot of work to do for you on this trip.” I love that girl… a proud mama.

Daddy, Emma, Brianna, and Parker; I miss you guys sooooooo much! Saturday I fell in love with this little girl! She was about 2 or 3 years old and the cutest thing ever! I played with the kids like all day Saturday and loved it, the little girl was named (pronounced salmon: but without the “L”). You guys would love it here! I’m not sure about Emma though. We discovered a black spider the size of my fist, Emma would have a heart attack! well please continue to post stuff on the blog! also remind other people to post things.

This trip has shown me how blessed I am, it is really hard to see all these people suffering when we have everything we need. I love you! (To: Bri hope you are feeling better. p.s. we have chocolate cake for dessert like every day! i think you would love Haiti!) (TO:Umma- there are a lot of bugs here! like a lot more than when we had old roof shingles! i still think you would like it. i feel like i am on the show “Survivors”!!! When i was at the beach today I stepped on a dead wasp and it got stuck between my toes. I didn’t even freak. I pulled it out and threw it into the grass:)

Daddy- You would absolutely love it here! i love you sooo much and tell Parker la-la said hi:) Oh and today i played volleyball with a Haitian boy and man and they loved it. every time it hit a tree, He would yell, “TWWEEEEE!” it was funny. And a 6-year-old boy was on the beach naked! Isn’t that wonderful? Anyways, i am exhausted soooo byyyyyyeeee! LOVE YOU<3<3<3

Dan, Emma, Bre, and Parker Boy… We have a team meeting right now, but know that I love you to the moon and back!

What an amazing thing it was tonight to hear all of your words and prayers of support. Before the messages were even read we were talking about how thankful we were for the amazing support of our Isight family. We definitely feel God’s presence through all of you. Our worship experience today was amazing as well. Even though there were few words we could understand we felt God’s presence and the passion these people have for Him throughout the whole service. (Isighters, we felt so at home because we brought folding chairs from the dorms and then immediately after the service we assembled together to stack them on the truck.) We were reminded that the focus isn’t to provide a perfect service, it’s not to sing in tune or perfect harmony, it’s not to sit in comfort, it’s not even to understand all that is being done or said. It’s an opportunity to be surrounded by other children of faith and worship our God with passion and excitement for what he has done, is doing and will do in our lives. How awesome is our God.

We had opportunities this afternoon to “see the sights.” Some of us enjoyed a ride on the back of a truck through the country side to pick up more wood for the boat. Others of us had the pain staking task of joining children and youth from the Mole at the local beach. Building relationships with a tennis ball and frisbee at the ocean is something we definitely should look at adding to Isight’s outreach ministry. Tomorrow we begin again with all our projects. We were reminded tonight to keep our focus on relationships and not entirely on the specific projects at hand. Pray that this will resonate in our hearts. A few shout outs are below:

Be bold. Poverty is all around us; “us” being all who call Christ his Savior. Whether here in Haiti or back in Western North Carolina people are in need of the Hope that our Savior brings. We can not sit still and hold onto that hope when we know that our neighbors don’t know or understand. How can we not share the best gift we have ever been given. Be Bold in the name of Christ! Pray for us to have that bold here. We thank you so much for your prayers and support. We love you all.

What an honor to see how God is working in different places at the same time! Amazing to think of all the different places (and languages) where His name is being praised. Our God is a BIG BIG God! Pray for Unity in the church- Be convicted in your own heart- so that we can effectively witness to those who do not know Christ. We are all well and feeling the energy of people from different places to come together to make things happen. We are looking forward to building chicken coops for about 14 chickens including 5 roosters. They survived a road trip over gravel roads that lasted over 8 hours. It was very hot for them riding on the top of an old school bus. The men who rode the bus were pretty weary when they arrived. We were fortunate to fly a twin engine prop plane that landed on a gravel road.

The garden has been prepared by Marvin and very little help from the rest of us at least until tomorrow morning when we all will pitch in. The plot is about 20 x 40 and has deep weeds and scraggly trees.

Goats will be purchased in Mare Rouge on Tuesday and brought to the mission and there will be about 18. The goats will be brought by the team and imagine there will be some duties for us to manage them and keep them safe on the truck.

We start the clinic tomorrow and it will be located in the church tent. The doctor from Asheville is a FP DO Mary and seems as open to my work as anyone I have met. Already done some duties. Haven’t started an IV in 10 years but it went in and I am thankful and so is she.

Oh yes, the beach, magnificent is not adequate. Yesterday we swam in our clothes it was so hot, but today swimming suites.

The church service was so meaningful and the people gracious and spirit filled.
